Tips for Handling Nerves and Owning the Stage
Does your heart race before you step on stage? Do your hands feel sweaty, and your tummy feels like it’s full of butterflies? Stage fright is completely normal, even the best dancers feel nervous before performing! The good news is that you can learn how to calm your nerves and dance with confidence. Here’s how!
1. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare!
The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel.
⭐ Practice Until You Know Your Routine Inside Out – If you know your steps well, you won’t have to worry about forgetting them.
⭐ Rehearse in Front of Others – Ask family or friends to watch you practice so you get used to performing for an audience.
⭐ Picture Yourself on Stage – Close your eyes and imagine yourself dancing confidently in front of a cheering crowd!
2. Control Your Breathing
Deep breathing helps calm your nerves and relax your body before a performance.
⭐ Take a Deep Breath In Through Your Nose – Hold it for a second, then slowly breathe out through your mouth.
⭐ Repeat 3-5 Times – This will slow down your heartbeat and help you feel calmer.
⭐ Think Positive Thoughts – Instead of saying “I’m so nervous,” tell yourself, “I’m excited and ready!”
3. Use Positive Self-Talk
What you say to yourself before you step on stage makes a big difference!
⭐ Say “I Can Do This!” – Remind yourself that you have trained hard and you are ready.
⭐ Turn Nerves into Excitement – Instead of thinking, “What if I mess up?” tell yourself, “I can’t wait to perform and have fun!”
⭐ Smile! – Even if you feel nervous, smiling tricks your brain into feeling more confident.
4. Focus on Your Performance, Not the Audience
It’s easy to feel nervous when you see a big crowd watching, but remember—you are telling a story through dance!
⭐ Dance for Yourself – Instead of worrying about what people think, focus on enjoying your performance.
⭐ Look Above the Audience – If eye contact makes you nervous, look slightly above their heads instead.
⭐ Stay in the Moment – Don’t overthink what’s next—just focus on one move at a time.
5. Remember: Mistakes Are OK!
Even professional dancers make mistakes sometimes! If you mess up, keep going and smile—most of the time, the audience won’t even notice!
⭐ Don’t Show It on Your Face – If you forget a step, just keep moving with confidence.
⭐ Trust Your Muscle Memory – Your body knows what to do—let it take over.
⭐ Enjoy the Experience – Performing is about expressing yourself, not being perfect!
6. Celebrate After You Perform!
After your performance, take a moment to feel proud of yourself!
⭐ Congratulate Yourself – You did it! No matter what happened, stepping on stage is a big achievement.
⭐ Watch Your Performance & Learn – Look for things you did well and ways to improve next time.
⭐ Get Excited for Your Next Performance – The more you perform, the easier it gets!
Step on Stage with Confidence!
Stage fright is normal, but with practice, you can turn nerves into excitement. Keep dancing, believe in yourself and most importantly……………..have fun on stage!
